Southampton has had a long history of waterpolo dating back to 1966 when they finished 7th in Div 2 of the National Waterpolo League (NWPL) and stayed mid table in Div 2 for around 10 years.
However, after being relegated to Div 3 in 1978, their final season playing in the NWPL was in 1979. During this period the waterpolo team was a part of the 'City of Southampton Swimming Club' (CSSC).
In 1997 Mark Williams, who was the Sport and Recreation Manager at what is now the Southampton Solent University, re-introduced waterpolo into CSSC using mainly students from the local Universities.
Numbers grew as the club also attracted old members from 'Eastleigh Waterpolo Club' that had folded a few years previously. These were then joined by a new group of talented young players in 2010 from Christchurch Seagulls Waterpolo Club.

In 2012 the decision was made by the small club committee of Mark Williams, Toby King and Jamie Spicer, to break away from the Southampton Swimming Club and form what is now 'Southampton City Waterpolo Club' (SCWP).
